Become a Volunteer Tutor for Children & Adults
The Whittier Area Literacy Council (WALC) of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier is seeking volunteers to tutor children and adults in basic literacy or English as a Second Language (ESL). Many students struggle with reading and writing, and with your help, we can bridge that gap.
No prior teaching experience is required! We provide all training and materials—you just need a passion for helping others.

Tutor Requirements & Commitment
- Commit to two hours per week for at least one year (shorter commitments may be available for internship or work-study opportunities).
- Choose to work with children or adults.
- Pass a background check and provide TB test results.
Flexible scheduling is available, including work-study opportunities for students at Rio Hondo College, and Whittier College. If you're interested in fulfilling an internship with us, please reach out to discuss eligibility.

Become a WALC Tutor!
Children’s Literacy Tutoring
WALC provides year-round literacy tutoring for children who are two or more years behind in reading skills. Students qualify for the program through an initial assessment, which helps determine their needs in three key areas:
- Word Reading – Strengthening decoding and recognition skills
- Sentence Comprehension – Improving reading fluency and understanding
- Spelling – Enhancing written communication
Our one-on-one tutoring sessions are free of charge and take place twice a week in structured intervals. Typical schedules are:
📅 Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday or Friday
🕒 Between 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
We are flexible and work with families and tutors to meet their needs. Many of our students develop a love for reading and build lasting connections with their tutors.
Adult Literacy & English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutoring
Our free, one-on-one tutoring program helps adults improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English. Sessions are:
- Confidential
- Flexible, scheduled based on student and tutor availability
- Tailored to personal goals
Through this program, students have:
✔ Improved job opportunities
✔ Earned citizenship status
✔ Gained confidence in communicating with teachers, employers, and their community

Work-Study & Teen Tutor Opportunities
📚 For College Students (Work-Study Program)
WALC partners with Rio Hondo College and Whittier College to offer work-study opportunities. Work-study tutors:
- Select their own tutoring days and times
- Choose to work with either children or adults
- Support WALC’s mission by assisting with family literacy events, community outreach, and occasional office work
🎓 Teen Tutor - Leader in Training Program
Our Leader in Training (LIT) Tutors are accepted in cohorts throughout the year. If you’re interested in joining the next round of interviews, please reach out for details. Certain qualifications must be met to participate in this program.
Tutors receive training, support, and materials to help them succeed while gaining valuable hands-on experience in education and community service.
