The Whittier Area Literacy Council (WALC) of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier is seeking volunteers to tutor children and adults in basic literacy or English as a Second Language (ESL). Many students struggle with reading and writing, and with your help, we can bridge that gap.
No prior teaching experience is required! We provide all training and materials—you just need a passion for helping others.

WALC provides year-round literacy tutoring for children who are two or more years behind in reading skills. Students qualify for the program through an initial assessment, which helps determine their needs in three key areas:
Our one-on-one tutoring sessions are free of charge and take place twice a week in structured intervals. Typical schedules are:
📅 Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday or Friday
🕒 Between 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
We are flexible and work with families and tutors to meet their needs. Many of our students develop a love for reading and build lasting connections with their tutors.
Our free, one-on-one tutoring program helps adults improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English. Sessions are:

🎓 Teen Tutor - Leader in Training Program
Our Leader in Training (LIT) Tutors are accepted in cohorts throughout the year. If you’re interested in joining the next round of interviews, please reach out for details. Certain qualifications must be met to participate in this program.
Tutors receive training, support, and materials to help them succeed while gaining valuable hands-on experience in education and community service.
Since 1962, the Whittier Area Literacy Council (WALC)—now part of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier—has provided free tutoring to help children succeed in school and empower adults through literacy.
