CHILDREN LITERACY
Children literacy tutoring is provided throughout the year for children that are two or more years behind in three categories of literacy based off an assessment we provide during their intake to qualify for the program. The three categories we focus on is increasing their word reading abilities, sentence comprehension and improving their spelling capacities. Children literacy tutoring is free of charge to all our families and is done 2 hours a week in intervals. Typically most of the sessions are schedule 3 pm - 6 pm and are done Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday. However, WALC is always willing to meet where your and your member's needs are at so we are flexible in our scheduling. Students who have participated in the program have grown to develop a fondness for reading and form lasting bonds with their tutor.
ADULT: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE & LITERACY
English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutoring is provided throughout the year for those who speak other languages and wish to read, write, and speak the English language. English as a second language tutoring is free of charge, is one-on-one, is confidential, and is planned around students' schedules. Students who have participated in ESL Tutoring have gained or improved their work opportunities, earned citizenship status, have learned to communicate with teachers and others in the community.

WHO: RIO HONODO COLLEGE STUDENTS
WHITTIER COLLEG STUDENTS
College work study tutors select the days and times for tutoring and whether they prefer to tutor an adult or school-age student. In addition, work-study students may assist with family literacy events, occasional office work, and community outreach. WALC offers training, support, and materials to tutors. College tutors will gain valuable work and tutoring experience with our team of dedicated volunteers and staff.
