Teaching people to read, write, and speak the English language.

The Whittier Area Literacy Council (WALC) is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to teaching people to read, write and speak the English Language (at no charge to our students). WALC has served Whittier and adjacent communities since 1962.
To fulfill our mission, WALC trains community volunteers and pairs them with students. We use a variety of methods and materials to meet the learning goals of our students. We partner with other non-profits and with city agencies. WALC is funded by grants, personal donations, the City of Whittier, fundraisers, membership dues and local service organizations. Board meetings are held on the first Saturday of every month.
The Whittier Area Literacy Council, Inc. is seeking volunteers for basic literacy or English as a Second Language tutors. Community volunteers can help children succeed in school and adults reach their career or life goals. Training sessions for prospective tutors are a mix of online courses and in-office training at the council office which is located at Calvary Baptist Church, 6548 Newlin Ave., Whittier, CA 90601. No teaching experience is necessary and all materials are provided. Tutors and students are asked to commit two hours a week for a year and may elect to work with children or adults. Come join our very successful program and make a difference in our community. To see our program in action click here. For more information or to register for training, please contact our Council Office at (562) 698-6598.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutoring is provided throughout the year for those who speak other languages and wish to read, write, and speak the English language. English as a second language tutoring is free of charge, is one-on-one or in small groups, is confidential, and is planned around students' schedules. Students who have participated in ESL Tutoring have gianed or improved their work opportunities, earned citizenship status, have learned to communicate with teachers and others in the community.
The mission of the Whittier Area Literacy Council is to build a stronger, more literate community by connecting those who can help with those who need it the most. Our trained community volunteers provide free individualized tutoring in basic literacy and English as a Second Language for children and adults.
